Who doesn't love chocolate and a cup of tea? With this indulgent, malty loose leaf tea from the powerhouse Indian tea-producing region of Assam, you can have both in one cup! Made with 20% cocoa, cardamom and ginger pieces, this chocolate-rich tea has all the deep flavour complexity and comforting character that make for the perfect winter tea for tea lovers. And thanks to the bright spices scattered throughout its deep black leaves, it's a feast for the eyes as well as your palate.

Assam is famous for its outstanding black teas and is one of only two places in the world with its own native tea plant, assamica – a robust, large-leaved variety of the parent tea bush, Camellia sinensis. Bold and brisk, Assam teas make wonderful carriers for strong spices, dried fruit and milk, so they are widely used in breakfast blends and chai.

In our Assam Chocolate Spice tea, assamica tea leaves are skillfully blended with premium cocoa pieces and Indian spices for a bright amber-coloured brew with a distinctive note of dark chocolate. The roasted chicory root adds a toasty back note, and the addition of warming ginger, cardamom and black pepper gives a distinctive wintry flavour and beautiful seasonal aroma. Enjoy it as is, for a vegan tea or with a splash of the white stuff to invoke chocolate milk – either way, it will feel like a treat for afternoon tea.

But don't the warming, indulgent flavour of this spiced tea fool you. Like other strong black teas, our Assam Chocolate Spice Chai contains plenty of good-for-you properties. These include polyphenols – antioxidants that studies show may deliver health benefits ranging from improved heart function to reduced blood cholesterol.

If you loved this spiced black tea...

If you enjoy this warming winter tea, you'll love our Christmas Tea Blend; a festive blend of light black tea, spices and orange. Then, dig deeper into our spiced teas with our other chai; why not add caddy of our Authentic Masala Chai, our Classic Karak Chai or our exquisitely fruity Chai of Madagascar.

Region

Sibsagar Assam Region, India

The Assam region of India, located in the northeastern part of the country, is renowned for its rich, full-bodied black tea, which forms the robust foundation of traditional Indian chai. Assam’s hot, humid climate, coupled with fertile alluvial soil, creates ideal conditions for cultivating not only tea but also a variety of spices integral to chai, such as ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, and bay leaf. These ingredients thrive in Assam's warm, wet environment, which accelerates growth and enhances the aromatic oils and pungency of the spices.

The abundant rainfall, averaging 2,500 to 3,000 mm annually, and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 37°C, boost the flavour and quality of both tea and spices. When combined, these spices and Assam tea create a deeply aromatic, invigorating brew that epitomises the authentic chai experience. Careful harvesting at optimal times—ginger and turmeric in winter, cardamom in late summer, and cloves and cinnamon during the late rainy season—ensures that
the spices retain their potent essential oils. Assam, therefore, is not just a producer of premium black tea but also a vital hub for the cultivation of the key spices that contribute to the complex flavours of Indian chai.
